Log Weight to Volume Calculator
Estimate the volume of a log from its known weight and species.
If you know the weight of a log—perhaps from a scale at a lumber yard or weigh station—you can work backwards to estimate its volume. This is useful for verifying transactions or for estimating the potential board foot yield of a log you've purchased by weight.
This calculator uses the average density of green wood to convert a known weight into an estimated volume in cubic feet. Simply provide the weight and the wood species to get a reliable volume estimate.
The calculation is a simple division problem.
- Input Log Weight: Enter the total weight of the log in pounds.
- Select Wood Species: Choose the species of the log. This provides the density (in lbs per cubic foot) needed for the calculation.
- Calculate Volume: The calculator divides the weight by the density to find the volume.
Volume (ftÂł) = Weight (lbs) / Density (lbs/ftÂł)
Always double-check your measurements before cutting.
Account for the kerf (the width of the saw blade) in your calculations.
Consider wood movement (expansion and contraction) in your final dimensions.
Buy 10-15% extra material to account for mistakes and waste.
